A Bit Of History

Scott County was formed on February 1, 1820, and named after General Charles Scott, a Revolutionary Way hero and early Kentucky Governor. It is 30 miles north of Louisville Kentucky. Scottsburg was founded in 1871 with the building of the Jeffersonville, Madison and Indianapolis Railroad. The town was named after Horace Scott, President of the railroad.

Scott County has 15 Indiana State Historical Markers scattered throughout the county. They are:

For more information on Scott County, you might want to visit The Scott County Heritage Center and Museum which contains many evocative displays. The Scott County and Heritage Center is also a great place to pick up additional tourist information. The museum is open Monday to Saturday from 9:00am - 5:00pm. Closed Sunday and most major holidays.

The Heritage Center and Museum is at 1050 S. Main Street. To get to Center, go south on Main Street from the southwest corner of the square. The Heritage Center and Museum on the right.

Lexington Old Settler's Weekend...

One of the state's oldest continuous festivals. Hosted by the Lexington Volunteer Fire Department and the Lexington Community.

Some special events are: Fiddle Contest, Baby Beauty Contest, The Scott County Pigeon Roost Massacre Re-enactment. (exact dates and times TBA)

The Heritage Garrison Weekend...

Held at The Scott County Heritage Center and Museum. There will be re-enactors from the French and Indian War, Pioneer Period, War of 1812, Native Americans, Civil War, Spanish-American War, The Boxer rebellion, World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam eras. (exact dates and times TBA)

 

 

The World's Fastest Boats at The Madison Regatta...

Madison, Indiana is normally a quiet little town on the banks of the Ohio River. The town is filled with history, quaint shops, historic homes and even a couple of wineries. But that all changes when the world's fastest boats take to the river.

Sanctioned by the American Power Boat Association since 1950, the Madison Unlimited race has always been scheduled for two or more heats with National High Points at Stake.

Austin Fireman's Festival...

The Austin Fireman's Festival, Exit 34 and follow signs, is small but packs a lot of punch from 4pm on Friday through Saturday night!

The arts and crafts festival kicks off on Friday evening with gospel music beginning at 4pm and continues until 11pm. On Saturday, throughout the day enjoy a mix of live music including Gospel, Bluegrass, Country and Rock. Bring a big appetite, there is plenty of food!! (exact dates and times TBA)

Pig Roast in The Park...

The Annual Pig Roast in The Park is held at Beechwood Park on the south edge of Scottsburg. This is a great family event sponsored by the Scottsburg Beautification Committee. (exact dates and times TBA)

Leota Country Frolic...

Leota is the site of the oldest crossroads in the State of Indiana. It is the only crossroads known to converge over a creek and it happens inside a covered bridge!

Not sure what a "country frolic" is? Webster defines it "to play in a light-hearted or lively manner". The tradition goes back to the time when farmers got together to share and celebrate prior to the beginning of the harvest season. (exact dates and times TBA)
