Scottsburg
The City of Scottsburg is governed by a Mayor and a five-member Common Council. The Water
Utility is under the authority of the Waterworks Board of Trustees. The municipal Electric
Utility and Municipal Sewage Works are under the jurisdiction of the Board of Public Works
and Safety. The Clerk-Treasurer is responsible for the financial record keeping of the
City. The City ( including the police department, utilities and part-time help) currently
employs 80 people.
Austin
The town of Austin has a three member Town Board which oversees the work of the Street
Department, Water Department and the Police Department. The Clerk Treasurer serves as
office manager and financial record keeper. The city has a total of 14 full time
employees.
Taxes
Local property taxes are assessed at on third of the true cash value of the property and
are subject to approximately 20% Property Tax Replacement Credit. Township taxes range
from $7.2353 per $100 to $7.6224 per $100. Property taxes payable in 1995 for major towns
and cities in Scott County were as follows: Scottsburg-$9.2864, Austin-$9.6887, Scott
County-$7.2353 to $7.6224 (township range).
County Government
Scott County government consists of three County Commissioners and a seven member County
Council, elected to serve four year terms.
An occupational income tax (COIT) is assessed at the rate of .009 per $1 of gross income.
State
State Personal Income Tax is 3.4% after personal exemptions. Corporate Income Tax is based
on adjusted gross income, gross income and/or supplementary net income (Companies pay two
of the three).
State sales tax is 5% on all retail sales except food.
