The Monument is dedicated to a community established here in 1809. It was attacked by Indians September 3, 1812. Nine adults and 15 children were massacred; one family escaped to spread the alarm.

5. Dr. John Richey Cemetery...
The Richey's were among the early settlers in this area, immigrating from Spencer County, Kentucky. Dr. John, born in 1790, was a botanical doctor whose family survived the massacre at Pigeon Roost. Family cemetery includes 21 grave sites.

6. Old Ox Church & Cemetery...
Founded in 1823, this is the oldest church in Scott County. Original building is log. An annual service is held in June. Leota Mount Grave site: the town of Leota was named after the infant who died in 1882, at age four. For years, her father, Mathias Mount had collected the "Finley Crossroads" mail, but was informed that to continue to do so, he would have to become a Postmaster, and that the town would have to be officially named. He named it for his daughter who had died two years before. Many grave markers in the cemetery date back to the early 1800s.

As you drive into Leota, just before you get to the bridge, notice the flower gardens on the right. These are the private gardens of Helen Trueblood, national authority and judge of daffodils, daylilies, and hostas.

8. Leota Covered Bridge...
Two aspects of this bridge are very unique: First it is the site of the original Cincinnati / Vincennes Road intersection and the Buffalo Trace which the buffalo followed to the salt licks. Second: it is the only known crossroads which intersect over a creek.

9. Morgan's Raid...
As you turn and go west on Leota Road, you will be on the same road that was taken by John Hunt Morgan, during his Confederate Raid on Indiana in 1863. 10. Overlook of Scott County...
When you reach the top of the hill, you may pull off the road and look back and to your left for a beautiful view of Scott County and beyond. The flat area which lies ahead is an old lake bed. You are in "The Knobs", a ridge of hills which angle through central Indiana. In these hills you will find oceanic fossils which were left behind from the Illinoian Advance Glacier, during the Ice Age, approximately 140,000 to 300,000 years ago.

11. Beech Grove Church, Est. 1820...
This is one of the earliest churches in Washington County. You are entering an Amish settlement. Drive carefully, many horse-drawn buggies are on the road. Please respect their request that photos not be taken of people. Photos of homes, farms and farm animals are permitted. As you drive, notice the different horses along the way: some are used to work in the fields, while others are used to pull buggies.

16. Elk Creek Lake / Knobstone Trail...
Elk Creek Lake is another one of the picture perfect spots where you can fish, hike, or picnic. this is also one of the Trail Heads for the Knobstone Trail, which is a wonderful hiking trail extending approximately 55 miles from Deam Lake to Vallonia.
Leave Elk Creek Lake and turn right at the stop sign. Go 1.8 miles (crossing Old 56 Intersection). Turn right onto St. Rd. 56 and return to where you began at Interstate 65 in Scottsburg.
An additional 1 plus mile trip to Historic Downtown Square / Shops / Restaurants / Antique and "gently used" shops, and The Scott County Heritage Center and Museum. Continue east on St. Rd. 56, cross I-65 and continue 1.1 miles until you reach the Courthouse and Downtown square.
There is a variety of interesting shops on the Historic Square, as well as several choices for very good food and the Historic Scott Theatre, now the Ross Country Jamboree.
To go to the Scott County Heritage Center and museum, go right on First Street, right on Wardell, then left on South Main. Continue south on Main Street until you see the Scott County Heritage Center and Museum, 1050 S. Main Street., on your right.

For many of us, it is a treat to discover a species we have not seen or photographed before. There are several places in and around Scott County where you can do just that. In this part of Indiana, you can find over 280 species of birds, including many migratory birds. Some of these include:

Approximately three years ago the wineries in central Indiana formed the Indiana Uplands Wine Trail. Name for the geographic region of Indiana where the wineries are located, the Indiana Uplands Wine Trail gives a glimpse to wine making in the region.
The Indiana Uplands are located in south-central Indiana, running from the Morgan/Monroe county line north of Bloomington south to the Ohio River, a distance of roughly 110 miles. At its widest point, from Jasper in Dubois County to Henryville in Clark County, the uplands are 65 miles wide. The uplands are a remnant of an un glaciated plateau.
